Loading the container at TWAM (December 14th)

The empty container (the back one) arrives at the TWAM warehouse...

... which is full to bursting with goods waiting to be shipped on various containers.

Oliver moves some computer monitors ready for loading..

A volunteer fork-lift truck driver lifts a double pallet of books and computers onto the container after which it is manoeuvred into position.

Nearly full - individual boxes are taken off a pallet and stowed.

Full to the brim now, with sewing machines added and bags of softer woollen items for padding to fill the space. Just room for Pat's bedding at the top!

That's it! Pat puts a seal on the door and it's off to the docks to be shipped to Mombasa, then by truck to Uganda. The container itself has been purchased and will stay at the school to act as a secure storage unit.

Oliver has been working as a volunteer at this Ipswich-based charity, which collects tools of all kinds including computers, sewing machines, carpentry, plumbing and garden tools, and regularly sends containers to Africa. They have organised the loading and shipping of our container to Uganda. After loading prepacked pallets by fork-lift, individual boxes are carefully placed by hand to ensure that the space is fully utilised and breakages minimised.
